Solar Panels ScotlandScotland-Specific Advice
Are you reading UK solar advice that doesn’t apply in Scotland?
Many UK solar websites give advice that only applies in England and Wales. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) does not exist in Scotland. Scottish homeowners use Home Energy Scotland instead — which includes a non-repayable grant plus an interest-free loan on top. Different DNOs, different planning rules, different grants. This site is Scotland-specific. All information applies to Scottish homeowners only.

Scotland-Specific Solar Facts
DNO: SPEN & SSEN
Scotland has two DNOs. We handle all G98/G99 applications for SPEN (Central Belt) and SSEN (Highlands/NE). Not UK Power Networks or Western Power.
Planning: Scottish SPP
Scottish Planning Policy differs to England's NPPF. Conservation area, listed building and NSA rules differ. We advise on Scottish requirements.
No HES Solar Grant
The HES solar PV grant stopped June 2024. But 0% VAT saves £900–£2,200 and SEG pays for exports. HES heat pump grants still available.
SEG UK-Wide
The Smart Export Guarantee applies in Scotland. Octopus Flux pays up to ~30p/kWh. Works the same in SPEN and SSEN areas.
Works in Scotland
Solar generates 3,000–4,000 kWh/year in Scotland. Works on overcast days. Cooler temperatures improve panel efficiency.
0% VAT Until 2027
0% VAT on solar panels, batteries and heat pumps applies across all of Scotland until 31 March 2027. Same as rest of UK.
Solar Panels Scotland FAQs
There is no direct solar panel grant in Scotland in 2026. The Home Energy Scotland solar PV grant stopped in June 2024. However, Scottish homeowners benefit from 0% VAT on solar panels until 31 March 2027 (saving £900–£2,200), and the Smart Export Guarantee pays for exported electricity. ECO4 may fund solar for qualifying low-income households. Call 0141 230 0198.
Solar panels in Scotland cost from £4,500 for a 3kWp system, £6,200 for a 4kWp system, and from £9,500 for a 6kWp system with battery storage. All prices include 0% VAT, valid until 31 March 2027. Call 0141 230 0198 for a free survey and quote.
Yes — solar panels work well in Scotland. While Scotland receives less sunshine than southern England, modern panels are highly efficient and generate electricity even on overcast days. Annual solar irradiation in central Scotland is typically 900–1,000 kWh/m² — sufficient for a 4kWp system to generate 3,200–3,600 kWh/year. This can cover 50–80% of a typical household's electricity use. Call 0141 230 0198.
Scotland has two DNOs. SP Energy Networks (SPEN) covers the Central Belt (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Fife, Ayrshire, Borders, Dumfries & Galloway). SSEN covers the Highlands, Islands, Aberdeen, Tayside and Perthshire. Scottish Energy Efficiency handles all DNO notifications (G98/G99) as part of every installation. Call 0141 230 0198.
Most solar installations in Scotland do not require planning permission under Permitted Development (PD) rights. Exceptions include listed buildings (Listed Building Consent required), properties in Conservation Areas (may need prior notification), and properties in National Scenic Areas. Scottish Energy Efficiency assesses all planning requirements. Call 0141 230 0198.
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a UK-wide scheme that pays homeowners for excess solar electricity exported to the grid. In Scotland, this works the same as in England — you register with a licensed SEG provider (e.g. Octopus Energy) and receive payments of 4–30p/kWh depending on the tariff. Octopus Intelligent Flux can pay up to ~30p/kWh during peak periods when combined with battery storage. Call 0141 230 0198.
Solar panels installed in Scotland typically last 25–30 years. Most panels come with a 25-year linear performance warranty guaranteeing at least 80% output at year 25. Scottish climate conditions (wet weather, lower temperatures) are actually beneficial for solar panel longevity as panels perform better in cooler temperatures. Call 0141 230 0198.
Yes — battery storage is available with solar panels in Scotland. GivEnergy 5kWh batteries start from £3,200, Tesla Powerwall 3 from £7,995. Battery storage allows you to store excess solar electricity for use in the evening and to maximise income from SEG tariffs like Octopus Flux. All prices include 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Call 0141 230 0198.
