Scotland has two DNOs. We handle all G98/G99 applications for SPEN (Central Belt) and SSEN (Highlands/NE). Not UK Power Networks or Western Power.

No HES Solar Grant
The HES solar PV grant stopped June 2024. But 0% VAT saves £900–£2,200 and SEG pays for exports. HES heat pump grants still available.
SEG UK-Wide
The Smart Export Guarantee applies in Scotland. Outgoing Octopus pays 12p/kWh flat (from March 2026). Works the same in SPEN and SSEN areas.

There is no direct solar panel grant in Scotland in 2026. The Home Energy Scotland solar PV grant stopped in June 2024. However, Scottish homeowners benefit from 0% VAT on solar panels until 31 March 2027 (saving £900–£2,200), and the Smart Export Guarantee pays for exported electricity. Most solar installations in Scotland do not require planning permission under Permitted Development (PD) rights. Exceptions include listed buildings (Listed Building Consent required), properties in Conservation Areas (may need prior notification), and properties in National Scenic Areas. The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a UK-wide scheme that pays homeowners for excess solar electricity exported to the grid. In Scotland, this works the same as in England — you register with a licensed SEG provider (e.g. Octopus Energy) and receive payments of roughly 1–25p/kWh on flat-rate tariffs, with time-of-use peaks higher. Solar panels installed in Scotland typically last 25–30 years. Most panels come with a 25-year linear performance warranty guaranteeing at least 80% output at year 25. For homes in Scotland with mains gas, a high-efficiency A-rated condensing boiler is often the fastest solution when a boiler fails. Modern combi and system boilers from Worcester Bosch, Baxi, and Glow-Worm achieve 92-94% efficiency, significantly reducing running costs compared to older models. Oil boiler replacements remain an option where a system has failed, but oil prices are volatile and running costs are typically higher than gas or heat pump alternatives. A replacement oil boiler costs £3,000-£5,500 installed in Scotland. Scottish homeowners switching from oil to an air source heat pump can access the HES grant of up to £7,500 (£9,000 for rural properties with the £1,500 rural uplift on the grant) plus an interest-free loan of up to £7,500 — making the switch far more affordable than it first appears. LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) boilers serve off-gas-grid homes in Scotland as an alternative to oil. They are cleaner-burning than oil but remain a fossil fuel with volatile pricing. Electric heating pairs particularly well with solar panels and battery storage in Scotland — using stored solar energy for heating dramatically cuts running costs. High-retention ceramic storage heaters, electric boilers, and infrared panels are increasingly popular in Scotland for flats, hard-to-treat properties, and homes without gas. They require no annual servicing, produce zero local emissions, and suit properties where heat pump installation is impractical (e.g. tenements without outdoor space). Running costs are higher than heat pumps but lower than older electric systems, especially on time-of-use tariffs. Ceramic heaters retain heat for 8-12 hours, releasing it gradually.
