Solar Grants & Incentives in Scotland (2026)

0% VAT on Solar Installations

Applied automatically until 31 March 2027. Saves £900-£2,200 depending on system size. No application needed.

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

Ongoing. Pays 6-15p/kWh for exported electricity (up to 30p/kWh with Octopus Flux and battery). Requires MCS certification, which we include with every install.

ECO4 — Fully Funded Solar for Eligible Households

Extended to December 2026. Provides fully funded solar for households on qualifying benefits (Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Child Benefit, ESA, JSA, and others). Check eligibility.

HES Solar Grant — No Longer Available

Home Energy Scotland stopped its solar PV grant in June 2024. The HES Grant now applies to heat pumps only (£7,500 grant + £7,500 interest-free loan). For solar, the 0% VAT and SEG are your primary financial incentives.

MCS Certification — Why It Matters

MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) certification is mandatory for accessing the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), ECO4, and all future government schemes. Without MCS certification, you cannot earn money from exported electricity.

We provide full MCS certification with every installation at no extra cost. This guarantees quality standards, provides insurance-backed warranties, and ensures your system qualifies for every available incentive.

Scottish Energy Efficiency is a fully MCS-certified and RECC member installer.

Solar Panel FAQ — Scotland

Yes. Edinburgh receives 990 kWh/kWp/year, roughly 90% of London's solar irradiance. Scotland's cooler air temperatures actually improve panel efficiency compared to warmer UK regions. Over 136,000 Scottish homes already have solar installed, generating meaningful electricity even during shorter winter days.

Solar panels in Scotland cost from £4,500 for a 3kWp system to £9,500+ for a 6kWp system with 5kWh battery storage, fully installed by MCS-certified Scottish Energy Efficiency. All prices include 0% VAT (valid until 31 March 2027), installation, scaffolding, MCS certification, and DNO notification.

In 2026, Scottish homeowners benefit from: 0% VAT on solar (saving £900-£2,200, automatic until March 2027), the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) paying 6-15p/kWh for exported electricity (ongoing), and ECO4 fully-funded installations for qualifying low-income households (extended to December 2026). Note: Home Energy Scotland stopped its solar PV grant in June 2024 and no longer funds solar panels.

From initial enquiry to switch-on typically takes 4-10 weeks. The physical installation itself takes 1-2 days for a standard residential system. We handle all MCS certification, DNO notification to SP Energy Networks (SPEN) or SSEN, scaffolding, and SEG registration paperwork.

In most cases, no. Solar panels are classed as Permitted Development in Scotland, meaning no planning permission is needed for most residential properties. Exceptions include listed buildings, properties in conservation areas, and some National Park locations. We assess planning requirements during your free survey.

The Smart Export Guarantee requires licensed electricity suppliers to pay you for surplus solar electricity you export to the grid. Standard SEG tariffs pay 6-15p/kWh. Premium tariffs such as the Octopus Intelligent Flux can pay up to approximately 30p/kWh during off-peak export windows, especially with battery storage. MCS certification is mandatory to qualify.

The typical payback period for solar panels in Scotland is 8-12 years depending on system size, electricity usage, and SEG tariff chosen. With battery storage, self-consumption increases to 60-80%, saving £800-£1,200 per year and reducing payback to 7-10 years. Panels continue generating for 25-30+ years beyond payback.

Yes. MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) certification is mandatory for your installation to qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee, ECO4 funding, and any future government schemes. It also ensures quality standards and provides insurance-backed warranties. Scottish Energy Efficiency holds full MCS certification.

Solar panels add value to your property. Research shows homes with solar sell for 4-14% more than comparable properties without. The MCS certificate, SEG contract, and all warranties transfer to the new owner. Solar is increasingly seen as a desirable home feature by buyers.

Yes. If you choose our Standard or Premium tier, we install a hybrid inverter with battery-ready wiring from day one, making future battery addition straightforward and cost-effective. Retrofitting a battery to a system without hybrid wiring is still possible but costs slightly more.
