EV Charger Installation FAQs

A standard EV charger installation typically takes between 2 and 4 hours. This includes mounting the unit, running the cable from your consumer unit, and full testing and commissioning. More complex installations — for example, where the consumer unit is far from the charging point or a three-phase supply is needed — may take a full day. We handle all electrical certification and notify your DNO as required.

The UK-wide OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) grant previously offered up to £350 off home charger installations, but eligibility criteria have changed. Currently, the EV chargepoint grant is available for renters and those living in flats. Homeowners in detached or semi-detached houses are no longer eligible for the OZEV grant. We recommend checking the latest GOV.UK guidance or contacting us on 0141 230 0198 for current eligibility.

Yes, and this is one of the most cost-effective combinations available. The myenergi Zappi charger is specifically designed to divert excess solar energy to your EV. In Eco mode, it uses only surplus solar generation. In Eco+ mode, it draws a mix of solar and grid power to maintain a minimum charge rate. Pairing a solar PV system with an EV charger can significantly reduce your transport costs.

A 7kW charger operates on a single-phase electricity supply, which is standard in most Scottish homes. It adds roughly 25–30 miles of range per hour of charging. A 22kW charger requires a three-phase supply, which is less common in residential properties but standard in many commercial premises. It charges approximately 3 times faster. Most homeowners find a 7kW charger more than sufficient for overnight charging.

In most cases, no. EV charger installations fall under permitted development rights in Scotland, provided the charger is within the curtilage of your property and not facing a highway in a conservation area. Listed buildings and properties in conservation areas may require additional consents. We advise checking with your local planning authority if you are unsure, and we can assist with any necessary applications.

It depends on your priorities. The Ohme Home Pro (from £799) is excellent value with smart tariff integration, ideal if you want to minimise electricity costs. The myenergi Zappi (from £899) is the best choice if you have or plan to install solar panels, thanks to its solar diversion capability. The Andersen A2 (from £1,200) is the premium option with a beautiful design and solid wood accents. All three are weatherproof and suited to Scottish conditions.

At average UK electricity rates of around 24p per kWh (2024), charging a typical 60kWh EV battery from empty to full costs approximately £14.40. With a smart tariff like Octopus Go, which offers off-peak rates as low as 7.5p per kWh, the same charge costs roughly £4.50. If you pair your charger with solar panels, daytime charging from your own generation is effectively free.

Most Scottish homes are suitable for EV charger installation. Key requirements include off-street parking (a driveway or garage), a consumer unit with capacity for a dedicated circuit, and a suitable wall or post for mounting. We carry out a free pre-installation survey to assess your property, check your electrical supply, and recommend the best charger and cable route. Call us on 0141 230 0198 to arrange a survey.
