Why BUS doesn’t apply in Scotland →HES Grant FAQs
Home Energy Scotland (HES) is a free advice and support service for Scottish homeowners and tenants, funded by the Scottish Government. It provides grants and loans for energy efficiency improvements including heat pump installation, insulation, and other measures. It is the main route to grant funding for heat pumps in Scotland — the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) does not apply in Scotland. Call 0141 230 0198.
The HES heat pump grant provides up to £7,500 towards the cost of an air source or ground source heat pump. Rural properties receive an additional £1,500 rural uplift, bringing the grant to £9,000. On top of this, a £7,500 interest-free loan is also available (£9,000 rural). Total HES support: up to £15,000 standard, or £18,000 rural. Call 0141 230 0198.
To be eligible for the HES heat pump grant, you must: be a homeowner or social landlord in Scotland; have a property that is suitable for a heat pump (i.e. well-insulated or able to be insulated as part of the project); use an MCS-certified installer registered with the HES scheme; and meet any income or property type criteria set by HES. Contact Home Energy Scotland on 0808 808 2282 or call Scottish Energy Efficiency on 0141 230 0198 to check eligibility.
On top of the HES grant, Scottish homeowners can apply for an interest-free loan of up to £7,500 (£9,000 for rural properties). This loan is repaid over a period agreed with HES, typically 10–12 years, with no interest charged. Combined with the grant, this gives up to £15,000 (£18,000 rural) towards a heat pump installation. The BUS in England does not offer a loan component — making HES more generous overall. Call 0141 230 0198.
Properties in rural or island locations in Scotland are eligible for an additional £1,500 uplift on both the HES grant and the interest-free loan. This means rural properties can access £9,000 grant + £9,000 loan = £18,000 in total HES support. Properties qualifying as rural are generally those outside major urban areas — HES will advise on whether your property qualifies. Call 0141 230 0198.
No — Home Energy Scotland stopped funding solar PV panels in June 2024. The HES scheme currently focuses on heat pumps, insulation, and storage heaters. Solar panels in Scotland are still eligible for 0% VAT (until 31 March 2027) and the Smart Export Guarantee, but there is no direct HES grant for solar at present. Call 0141 230 0198 for current solar pricing.
To apply for Home Energy Scotland grants: 1) Call Home Energy Scotland on 0808 808 2282 or visit homeenergyscotland.org. 2) They will complete a phone assessment of your home and circumstances. 3) If eligible, they will refer you to a registered HES installer such as Scottish Energy Efficiency. 4) We will survey your property, design the system, and complete the grant application. The HES grant process typically takes 6–12 weeks from initial enquiry to installation. This includes: HES eligibility assessment (1–2 weeks), installer survey and system design (1–2 weeks), grant application submission and approval (2–4 weeks), and installation (1–2 weeks). Scottish Energy Efficiency manages the entire process on your behalf. Call 0141 230 0198 to start.
