Battery Storage Scotland FAQs
Battery storage works the same in Scotland as elsewhere in the UK. The main Scotland-specific consideration is your DNO (SPEN or SSEN) β battery systems above a certain size may require G99 approval. SPEN and SSEN have their own application processes. Scottish Energy Efficiency handles all DNO applications for battery storage installations. Call 0141 230 0198.
Yes β Octopus Intelligent Flux works in Scotland and can pay up to ~30p/kWh for electricity exported during peak periods. You need a smart meter, which can be installed by Octopus. The Flux tariff works with both SPEN and SSEN network areas. Combined with a battery system, you can significantly increase your SEG income. Call 0141 230 0198.
Battery storage in Scotland costs from Β£3,200 for a GivEnergy 5kWh system, Β£4,500 for a 9.5kWh system, and from Β£7,995 for a Tesla Powerwall 3. All prices include 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Call 0141 230 0198 for a free survey and personalised quote.
No β you can add battery storage without solar panels. A standalone battery can charge from the grid at cheap overnight tariff rates (e.g. Octopus Intelligent) and discharge during expensive peak periods. However, solar + battery together gives the maximum benefit. Scottish Energy Efficiency installs both solar-paired and standalone battery systems. Call 0141 230 0198.
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays Scottish homeowners for excess electricity exported to the grid. Standard tariffs pay 4β15p/kWh. Premium tariffs like Octopus Intelligent Flux can pay up to ~30p/kWh during peak export periods (typically 4β7pm). The SEG applies equally in SPEN and SSEN network areas. Call 0141 230 0198.
Yes β battery storage systems qualify for 0% VAT in Scotland and across the UK until 31 March 2027. This applies to standalone battery storage as well as batteries installed alongside solar panels. After March 2027, VAT will revert to 5%. Call 0141 230 0198 for current pricing.
All lithium battery systems (GivEnergy, Tesla, Fox ESS) operate within a temperature range suitable for Scotland's climate. Most battery systems are rated for operation between -10Β°C and +50Β°C. We recommend indoor installation (garage, utility room) for optimal performance in colder Scottish regions. Outdoor installation is possible with some systems. Call 0141 230 0198.
Standalone battery storage (without solar) does not generally require DNO notification. Battery storage added to an existing solar system may require G98 or G99 notification depending on the combined inverter output. For new solar + battery systems, we handle all SPEN or SSEN notifications. Call 0141 230 0198.
