Yes, solar panels are absolutely worth it in Scotland. Scotland receives between 800 and 1,000 kWh of generation per kWp installed per year — more than enough to make solar financially viable. A typical 6 kWp system generates 5,000–6,000 kWh annually, covering 50–70% of an average household's electricity demand. With electricity at around 24.5p/kWh and the Smart Export Guarantee paying up to 15p/kWh for surplus, most systems pay for themselves within 8–12 years. Add a battery and you can use 80–90% of your generation, cutting your payback period further. Scotland's long summer daylight hours (17+ hours in June) compensate for the shorter winter days.

Home Energy Scotland stopped offering solar panel grants in June 2024, so there is currently no direct cash grant for solar PV in Scotland. However, two significant financial incentives remain: 0% VAT on residential solar installations (confirmed until at least March 2027, saving approximately £2,500 on a typical system) and the ECO4 scheme (running until 31 December 2026), which funds solar and insulation for qualifying low-income households. The Home Energy Scotland interest-free loan of up to £7,500 remains available for other renewables such as heat pumps. Generally no, solar panels are permitted development in Scotland and do not require planning permission. This applies to roof-mounted systems that do not protrude more than 200 mm from the roof surface, do not extend above the highest point of the roof, and are not on a listed building. If your property is in a conservation area, national scenic area, or is a listed building, you will need to apply for planning consent from your local council. Ground-mounted arrays over 9 m² also require planning permission. We handle all planning checks as part of our free survey — if consent is needed, we manage the application for you.

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays you for surplus electricity you export to the grid at roughly 1p to 25p/kWh on flat-rate export tariffs, with time-of-use peaks higher. All licensed electricity suppliers with 150,000 or more customers must offer a SEG tariff. The best current rate is Octopus Energy's Outgoing Octopus tariff at 12p/kWh flat rate, available from March 2026. To qualify for the SEG, your installation must be MCS-certified — which every system is, as all installations are carried out by our MCS-registered partner Home Heating Services Scotland. With a battery, you can store daytime generation and export during evening peak hours for higher returns. We help every client register for the SEG as part of our aftercare.

A standard solar panel installation takes 1–2 days to complete. Day one covers scaffolding erection, roof mounting rail installation, panel fitting, and DC wiring. Day two (if needed) covers AC wiring, inverter and meter installation, and system commissioning. Adding a battery to the installation requires approximately one extra day. The entire process from accepting your quote to switch-on is typically 4–8 weeks, which includes DNO application processing (usually 2–4 weeks), scheduling, and any grant paperwork. We keep you updated at every stage and confirm your installation date as soon as the DNO approves the connection.

The survey is free, takes approximately one hour, and involves no obligation. Our surveyor assesses your roof orientation, pitch, and structural condition; checks your existing electrical installation (consumer unit, earthing, meter type); analyses shading from nearby trees, buildings, or chimneys throughout the day; measures available roof area and plans panel layout for maximum generation; discusses your energy usage and recommends the right system size and battery capacity. You receive a written quote within 48 hours of the survey, including itemised costs, expected generation figures, and payback estimates specific to your property.

We are based in Dundee and regularly carry out installations from the Scottish Borders to Inverness and everywhere in between. We handle the DNO application for whichever region your property falls in — the process differs slightly between SPEN and SSEN, and we know both inside out.

Every installation includes a 30-year manufacturer warranty on the solar panels (AIKO 500 W), a 10-year warranty on the battery (Hanchu), a 10-year warranty on the hybrid inverter, and a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee underwritten by an A-rated insurer. The insurance-backed guarantee protects you even if the installation company were to cease trading — your warranty remains valid and enforceable. All warranties are registered in your name upon commissioning and you receive full documentation. The MCS certification also means your system is independently verified to meet published installation standards.

All installations are carried out by Home Heating Services (Scotland) Ltd, our MCS-registered installation partner (company number SC484353). They hold MCS certification for solar PV, battery storage, and air source heat pumps; TrustMark registration (No. 3559930), the UK government's endorsed quality scheme. Scottish Energy Efficiency is an advisory business — we design your system, manage your project, and handle all paperwork. The physical installation is carried out by directly employed, qualified engineers from Home Heating Services Scotland. No work is subcontracted to third parties.
