DNO Connections in Rural Scotland
The majority of rural Scotland is served by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), which covers the Highlands, Islands, north east Scotland, Tayside, Perthshire and Argyll and Bute. Some rural areas in the Borders and Dumfries and Galloway are served by SP Energy Networks (SPEN). In very remote areas, SSEN may have specific grid capacity considerations.
Your installer handles all DNO notification and connection arrangements as part of the survey and installation. For remote properties without a grid connection, an off-grid solar and battery design is available. We install through MCS-certified partners.
Rural Solar & Battery FAQs
Yes. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight rather than direct sunshine, so they work effectively across rural Scotland including the Highlands, Islands, Argyll, Perthshire and rural Aberdeenshire. Rural properties often have more roof and ground space for panels, and longer summer days at northern latitudes give extended generation hours. Battery storage is especially useful in rural areas where grid supply may be less reliable.
A battery stores surplus electricity your panels produce during the day so you can use it in the evening and overnight instead of drawing from the grid. In rural Scotland this means more self-sufficiency and less reliance on the grid, which can be useful in remote areas. A battery also lets you choose when to export spare electricity on the best available export tariff and pairs well with time-of-use tariffs.

Full off-grid solar is technically possible in rural Scotland, typically using a larger battery bank and a generator backup. However, grid-connected solar with battery storage is usually more practical as you can export surplus energy and benefit from export tariffs. For remote properties without a grid connection, an off-grid design is available. Your survey covers the options for your property.
Yes. 0% VAT on solar panels and battery storage applies across the whole UK including rural Scotland, until 31 March 2027. Your installer applies the correct rate automatically and your quote shows the 0% VAT position. After March 2027 the rate reverts to the reduced 5% rate for energy-saving materials.
Finance is available, subject to status. Your survey quote explains the options available to you. We install through our installer partners and your no-obligation survey covers system sizing, panel placement and battery capacity for your rural property anywhere in Scotland.
Croft houses and farmhouses can be suitable for solar panels where there is suitable roof or ground space and the property has a grid connection. The domestic installation covers the residential part of the property. Your survey assesses roof orientation, shading, available space and household electricity usage to recommend a suitable system.
Rural Scottish solar owners can earn money for exported electricity through the Smart Export Guarantee and Octopus export tariffs. Rates vary by supplier and tariff type, and some time-of-use export tariffs pay more at peak times. Your survey quote shows the export tariff options available for your system.
